Ex-San Lorenzo President Accuses Leadership of Coup Attempt

Former San Lorenzo president Marcelo Moretti issued a sharp statement accusing the club's interim leadership, led by Sergio Costantino, of an 'institutional coup.' He claims the promised $12 million to stabilize finances was never received and accusations against his administration are false.

Ex-San Lorenzo President Accuses Leadership of Coup Attempt

Buenos Aires, January 12 (NA) — The former president of San Lorenzo, Marcelo Moretti, published a harsh message on his social networks against the current leadership of the 'Cyclone' and pointed directly at Sergio Costantino, whom he accused of leading an 'institutional coup.' In his defense, the former head of state stated that the transitional leadership lied to the AFA and is now trying to solve the club's economic problems with resources generated during his management, as learned by the Argentine News Agency (NA). One of the central points of his criticism, Moretti assured that Costantino presented a plan to inject 12 million dollars and stabilize the institution's finances in meetings with the AFA held in October and November. According to his complaint, that money 'never appeared' and, after almost three weeks in charge of the club, the current leadership 'is not going to put in a peso,' leaving —in his view— a broken promise evident. The former president also referred to the injunctions weighing on San Lorenzo and affirmed that they will be lifted with funds from the sale of players from the squad he assembled. 'They will lift the injunctions that they themselves caused with the money from the sales of the players from the Moretti era,' he shot, and warned about a possible 'fire sale of assets' without a sports project or long-term planning. In another part of the message, Moretti defended his administration by listing payments made, economic rights in force, and assets that he claimed to have left in the club. He also questioned the current policy on memberships and assured that revenue will be less than during his tenure, when 21,000 members were reached, pointing to decisions that —in his view— harm the associates. Finally, Moretti insisted that the declared vacancy at San Lorenzo is 'non-existent' and qualified it as an 'administrative and documentary farce.' After several judicial setbacks, he assured that Justice will rule in his favor and he will return to the presidency. 'They insisted on consummating the institutional coup out of sheer whim to be in a place they were not given by the voters at the polls,' he concluded in a message that once again ignited the internal political struggle in Boedo.
